The Department of the Registrar General is headed by the Registrar General.

The Department of Registrar General is responsible for official registration of births, deaths, marriages, documents, business organisations, trademarks, patents, utility models and industrial designs.

It is also responsible for the protection of copyrights and handles all matters related to work of the official receiver. The department derives its powers from various laws dealing with various subjects.

To ensure that all companies and other business of various descriptions are properly registered and are carrying on their business according to the companies, and Business Names Acts.

To ensure that all vital events like births, deaths, marriages, and adoptions are registered according to the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, the various Marriages Acts, and law relating to adoptions.

To ensure adequate protection of intellectual property by way of registering patents and trademarks and protection of copyrights, pursuant to the patents, Trademarks, and Copyright Act.
